Solar Power for Homes

In the 1970s, solar power was used on satellites and was considered too expensive for conventional applications. In 1974, only six private homes were heated by solar power systems. But the 1973 oil embargo and the 1979 energy crisis changed the paradigm, and attention to solar technologies was refocused. Incentives and research facilities in Japan, the United States, and Germany led to major improvements in the technology and its deployment. Today, more than 50,000 private homes use solar power.
